It’s your event, you should enjoy it, not spend your time taking photographs.

If an event is worth having, it’s worth documenting. If it’s worth documenting, it’s worth doing it right. And if it’s worth doing right, you may as well hire a photographer with some great experience.
A good event photographer doesn’t just stand back and snap the shutter. A good event photographer gets in there and connects with the guests; they capture not only who was there and what went on, but the experience had by your guests… The grins and laughter, the essence of the event. After all, what’s the point of photographing your event if your uncle Larry falling off his chair is missed, or nobody sees the face your CEO makes when your keynote speaker pokes some fun at her?
